The first decision when entering the camper world is usually this: a motorhome, or a caravan towed behind a car? Both have strengths. The right choice depends on how you will use it.
What is a motorhome?
A motorhome is a vehicle whose body has been turned into a living space. Panel van conversions belong to this group. The cab and the living area are in one vehicle, so there is nothing to tow.
What is a towed caravan?
A towed caravan has no engine and is pulled behind a car. Once you reach the campsite, you can leave the caravan and explore by car.
Comparison
- Driving and manoeuvring: a motorhome is one unit, so driving and reversing are easier. Reversing with a caravan takes practice.
- Setup: park a motorhome and you're in your living space within minutes. A caravan needs hitching, unhitching and levelling.
- Exploring locally: with a caravan you can leave it at the campsite and explore by car. With a motorhome, your living space comes with you.
- Parking and storage: panel-van-based motorhomes can fit a normal parking space; a caravan needs its own spot.
- Licence: for a caravan, always check that your licence category covers the combined weight.
- Maintenance: a motorhome combines vehicle and living-space maintenance in one; a caravan means maintaining two vehicles.
Which one suits whom?
A motorhome suits people who change routes often, love weekend trips, want to use it in town too and prefer one vehicle for everything. A towed caravan suits those who stay in one area for longer and do day trips by car.
