Insulation is one of the most underestimated yet most decisive aspects of a camper. You can't see it, but it directly affects the comfort of every night you spend on board and the lifespan of your vehicle. Here is why camper insulation matters so much.
Year-round comfort
A well-insulated camper stays cool in the summer heat and warm in the winter cold. This isn't just about comfort; it also significantly reduces the energy spent on heating and cooling. Poor insulation means even the most powerful heater is working in vain.
Condensation and moisture control
Breathing, cooking and heating inside a camper all produce moisture. That moisture condenses on cold metal surfaces and turns into droplets. Left unchecked, it leads to mould, bad smells and, over time, rust and rot. The right insulation and ventilation manage condensation and extend the life of your camper.
Sound insulation
Good insulation also reduces outside noise. An interior where the sound of rain, wind and traffic is muffled offers far more peaceful sleep and rest.
Material options
- XPS/EPS foam boards: High thermal insulation and low moisture absorption; ideal for flat surfaces.
- Rubber-based insulation (e.g. Armaflex-type products): Follows curved surfaces and also acts as a vapour barrier.
- Wool and fibre products: Natural, breathable alternatives that are effective when applied correctly.
In most quality builds these materials are used together, depending on the surface and area. What matters is applying them without gaps and keeping thermal bridges to a minimum.
Floor, walls and roof
Insulation isn't limited to the walls. A significant share of heat escapes through the floor and the roof, so all three surfaces need to be insulated as a whole.
Can insulation be added later?
If your existing camper suffers from cold, condensation or damp, the insulation can be upgraded as part of a camper renovation. Even so, the best approach is to get the insulation right during the build.
