A solid electrical system is the foundation of comfort in a camper. A well-planned installation lets you run your fridge, lighting and devices for days without needing mains power. Here is what you need to know when planning a camper electrical system.
Start by calculating your consumption
Everything begins with knowing how much energy you use each day. List the power rating (watts) of the devices you will use and how many hours a day each will run. The fridge, LED lighting, water pump, phone/laptop charging and air conditioning, if fitted, are the biggest items. This total determines your battery and panel capacity.
Batteries: the heart of the system
Batteries store the energy. There are two common options:
- Gel (AGM) batteries: Lower upfront cost, but heavier, with more limited usable capacity.
- Lithium (LiFePO4) batteries: Lighter and longer-lasting, and you can use almost all of their capacity. The upfront cost is higher, but they usually pay off in the long run.
Solar panels: the key to independence
Solar panels charge your batteries for free throughout the day. Panel output should be chosen according to your consumption and the season you travel in. You can get the most out of your panels with an MPPT charge controller. You'll find the details in our guide to choosing solar panels.
Inverter: for 220V appliances
Your batteries store 12V direct current (DC), but many household appliances run on 220V alternating current (AC). The inverter handles this conversion. Choose the inverter's rating based on the highest combined load you will run at the same time.
Charging sources
- Solar panels: Silent, free energy during the day.
- The vehicle's alternator (DC-DC charging): Charges the batteries while you drive.
- Mains hook-up: Charging from a socket at campsites.
The ideal system uses all three sources together, so you are never left without power, whatever the conditions.
Safety comes first
Correctly sized cables, fuses and quality connections are essential for both efficiency and safety. Electrical workmanship is something you should never compromise on if you want peace of mind on the road. At Antora Karavan we give a 2-year warranty on our electrical workmanship.
